Presently, our company is running two Microsoft SQL Servers with local storage only. At the time, we configured four RAID-1 volumes for maximum availability. (At the time, performance was not an issue). However, we have outgrown this RAID-1 configuration and are experiencing high disk queues. We have plans in mid-2009 to migrate from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 or 2008 in a full blown ESX implementation. However, for the time being, we are planning on purchasing 3 VSA's to use solely for iSCSI storage. We want to migrate our databases off the internal disks onto the VSA volumes. We will not be creating a SQL Server VM. The physical server will remain intact for the time being.

We planned on purchasing the following configuration:
3 x Intel SSR212MC Storage Arrays with
12 x 147GB Seagate Cheetah SAS 15k RPM Drives (Intended for data storage)
2 x 73gb Seagate Cheetah 2.5" SAS 10k RPM Drives in a RAID-1 (Intended for installation of Host OS)
4 x 1GB Ethernet Interfaces
2 x Intel Xeon E5405 2.0ghz Quad Core Processors
8 GB Full Buffered / ECC DDR2/667 RAM

With this hardware, we would install ESX on the 73gb 2.5" drives. The remaining 15k drives would all be used to hold iSCSI volumes with the SQL databases. We planned on using two-way volume replication to ensure high-availability of all volumes.

I was wondering if anyone out there was using VSA for SQL Server. Based on this configuration, does it sound like we are on the right track?
I have experience working with physical Lefthand NSM's. I know that on the NSM, you specify the RAID level in the SanIQ setup. In the case of VSA, does SanIQ just use whatever storage you present it? I am guessing that since it is using ESX, the VSA will just use whatever storage you present it?

I greatly appreciate anyone's input to this configuration. Having worked with ESX and Lefthand NSM's, I feel like I have a decent understanding of each technology. However, its the conversion of the two technologies where I am getting a little mixed up.

Thank You,

Dan
