I have two VSAs located on ESX servers that are interconnected by fiber across a parking lot. VM1 is on ESX1 and VM2 is on ESX2. I am interested in maximum response time between the VM and it's DATA. Is there a way to force the listed "Gateway Storage Module" for a given volume? And, will it help with SQL performance? Right now the sql DATA for VM1 is pointed to the opposite VSA. Thanks.

The "multi site SAN solution pack" allows you to have multiple VIPs, one on each side, which makes the cluster aware of its geography.
It requires different subnets in each site but once configured the condition you are requesting is automatic. Any iSCSI sessions initiated in a particular site are balanced to storage nodes in that same site.
Aside from that feature you cannot force the gateway to a particular NSM in SAN/iQ 7.

So how does it decide the first time? Will it change if I start the Virtual Manager and take the primary SAN offline?

New iSCSI sessions are load balanced to the storage node with the fewest iSCSI sessions.

For Multi-Site SANs they are balanced to the storage node in the site with the fewest iSCSI sessions.

Inducing a failover will change the gateway. The same process is followed on session recovery.
