| I'm new to the VSA and SAN's in general, so hope this is not too basic. I have an ESX 3i host with the LH VSA installed to the local datastore. I used the CMC to create a SAN volume that consumed the remaining available space on the local disk. I can see my SAN volumes fine using the vmware iSCSI initiator. I'm building an HA / DRS cluster with my hosts, and needed to reboot my host. The VSA was the only VM running on the host. I shut down the VSA, entered maintenance mode (but kept the VSA installed on the host) and rebooted the host. When it came back up, I no longer have any access to my local datastore. I can see other SAN volumes (from other VSA's in my environment). The VSA is marked "inaccessible". My question - what do I need to do when I need to reboot my host? Also, can I migrate a VSA to another host and still have it function as expected? Thanks.

Shutting down a VSA before shutting down the ESX server should not be done. I leave my VSA setup to be powered on automatically by the ESX server and when I want to reboot the ESX server I just do, letting the VSA get taken down by ESX. SAN/iQ is built for that and it prevents you from taking disks away from the ESX server before powering it off.
If you move a VSA from one location to the next it should still function but there are so many caveats to that comment. Is the network the same? Is there enough space? are the disks slower or faster?
