Hi,
Has anyone attempted to use VMWare's VCB to backup a guest VSA to tape? I wonder if this is theoritically possible. If a SMB requires data archival and/or site recoverability without the requirement of a low RTO, I think we can finally "backup" a Lefthand SAN module to tape, using VCB. This would be a nice backup alternative in addition to the obvious replication.

| I don't see why you could not do that. I expect many people will start doing that to make PrimeSync easier. Today when users want to quickly get Remote Copy up and running they can PrimeSync to a local NSM, then ship that NSM to the other site, and PrimeSync again. Then from there only the deltas of that data has to go across the wire, skipping the days of initial copy that it might have taken to get started. It seems a little easier and cheaper to do the same thing to a VSA and just ship a tape / DVD / USB drive instead of an NSM. Never underestimate the bandwidth of a truck full of disks. Keep in mind though, if you are backing up a single VSA that is part of a cluster of many you'll have to think about quorum and replication levels. Otherwise you might recover a VSA that is fully functional but contains incomplete and therefore useless data.
